Seriously, I really think you should go and revamp a bunch of vehicles from the battletech universe. Some of them really need it...

They were just referencing a time in MWO where the Spider had some buggy hitboxes and ended up being able to soak up more damage than an Atlas.

Nice work as usual. A few crits though:
Have you thought of stepping it up on the beam effects? Right now I'd say those are the weakest point in your work. Personally I try to make a very tight beam of light that gives off a colored glow, rather than a solid colored beam.
I've heard a few people say you under scale the infantry / over scale the mechs and I agree, that could be something to look into also.

Hi, thx for your feedback!

The laser controversy... :)
For all the MWO inspired works I tried to get as close to the effect how it is shown in the game...which is quite bright and glowy...

I like your laser approach too...

In the end I assume it is personal taste, when we go the realistic way, the beams would be borderline invisible, even if high-powered as the ones used in the BT universe...

The scaling I use is the in-game scale (which is quite accurate I think), I prerender my artworks so every model should be scaled correctly...most times the "virtual" camera is wide-angled which can distort the scaling a bit...

It's pretty hard to google screen shots that aren't aren't of closed beta forest colony, so these effect might be out dated, but they show a bit of what I'm talking about:
[link]
The core of the beam is mostly white, while it's the broad glow around the beam that gives it color. With the average glance at it someone simply thinks "green laser" and when they go to reproduce that they will do a green shaft, rather than an almost white one.
How thick, textured, bright, etc you make the beam is indeed up to personal taste, but I think going with a brighter core goes a long way to conveying the intensity of the beam without looking solid.

Your scale mech to mech is indeed correct. It's the scale of infantry to mech that is off. The only human figure in the game is the pilot which I'd say is almost guaranteed to be off in scale in order to manage the cockpit view better in game. It should be pretty simple to reference the 1.7m average adult height against a few canon mech heights to find something close. I always insert a fair bit of eye balling too, better to look right rather than just being technically right.

I've heard a few people talk about these points outside of DA and there's always a "but what can we do", so I thought I'd help you out there :D
Keep up the good work, the community enjoys it.

Ah, ok I see what you mean...basically it is more or less the same technique I use, only with a white center beam instead of different shades of green, I'll play with a bit more next time, maybe there is something in between which fits...

One of the in-game pilot models (pilot_scale.cgf) is correctly scaled in comp. to the mechs...here is a quick direct comparison:
[link]

The Blackjack is 7 1/3 "pilots" in height, which means, if we consider the average 1.7m you mentioned, it is nearly 12m...that is definitely not off-scale when we talk MWO...the canon scale is a bit different but not that much ("canon scale" is a stretch in itself, very few measurements are given, afaik) a canonical Hunchback for instance, is 10 or 11m in height?!

In that case I prefer the technical correctness over asthetic aspects...

Thx again for the feedback and tips, keep it up too!

I guess MWO is just going for something bigger. I tend to try making things as small as reasonable, so that blackjack looks like a heavy to me :D

Especially when they've got ECM and a PPC. They just keep running around and hitting you. Not fast killers, but annoying, and each time they deal quite a bit of damage.
